Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (13 October 1948 – 16 August 1997) was a Pakistani singer, songwriter and music director, and the most celebrated qawwal of the modern era — titled Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, the King of Kings of Qawwali. Born in Faisalabad into a family whose qawwali lineage runs back some six centuries, he took over the family party in 1971 and carried Sufi devotional music to audiences far beyond South Asia, recording for Peter Gabriel's Real World label and collaborating with Michael Brook and Eddie Vedder. 'Mustt Mustt', 'Allah Hoo', 'Dam Mast Qalandar' and 'Afreen Afreen' remain his signatures. He died in London in 1997, aged 48, holding a Guinness World Record for the largest recorded output of any qawwali artist.
