Ustad Talib Hussain Dard (c. 1952–2019) was a Punjabi and Saraiki folk singer from Khanowana, a village outside Jhang, who started singing at fifteen in 1967 and kept at it for half a century. He was a master of the dohra and the mahiya — the short, plain verse forms of rural Punjab — sung high and unadorned over harmonium and tabla in the Jhangochi dialect, and he carried the old romances of Sohni Mahiwal and Sassi Punnu. His son puts his output past twenty thousand songs, dohras and mahiyas. Late in life he observed that his service to folk music had never been recognised by the state.
