Ustad Raees Ahmad Khan is a Pakistani violinist based in Rawalpindi, and one of very few to treat the instrument as a solo voice in a tradition that normally keeps it in accompaniment. The son of the sitar player Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, he began at nine and practised from four in the morning under his father's eye. Across more than forty years he has toured Europe, the Middle East and the United States, having first gone abroad to Holland to play alongside the ghazal singer Ghulam Ali. In January 2025 the Punjab Arts Council in Rawalpindi honoured him for four decades of playing. What listeners note is how close his line sits to a singer's: the violin phrases the melody the way a voice would.
