Vital Signs were a Pakistani pop band formed in Rawalpindi in 1986 by keyboardist Rohail Hyatt and bassist Shahzad 'Shahi' Hasan, joined by guitarist Nusrat Hussain and the vocalist who became their face, Junaid Jamshed (1964–2016). Their 1987 single 'Dil Dil Pakistan', written for the country's fortieth Independence Day and filmed by Shoaib Mansoor, has served ever since as an unofficial second anthem; a 2003 BBC World Service poll ranked it the third most popular song in the world. Across four albums — Vital Signs 1 (1989), Vital Signs 2 (1991), Aitebar (1993) and Hum Tum (1995) — they defined Pakistani pop for a generation, and stopped performing together in 1998. Rohail Hyatt went on to found Coke Studio.
