Mehdi Hassan: a guide to the King of Ghazal

Patari · 2026-07-18

Mehdi Hassan (1927–2012) is, quite simply, the voice against which every ghazal singer since has been measured — the Shahenshah-e-Ghazal, the King of Ghazal. He took a courtly, difficult form and made it feel like a whispered confidence.

The essential recordings

Begin with Mujhe Tum Nazar Se, perhaps his most beloved ghazal, then Khamosh Lab Hai and Tum Mere Ho. What to listen for is the restraint — every note serves the poetry, never the singer.

Where to go next

Born in Rajasthan and raised in the Kalawant musical lineage, Mehdi Hassan carried classical craft into popular song. To hear the tradition around him, turn to Farida Khanum, Ghulam Ali and Iqbal Bano, or browse the whole Urdu ghazal canon on Patari.
