Sindhi Sufi and folk: where to start

Patari · 2026-07-17

Sindh sings its saints. Its music runs from the centuries-old kalam of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai to a thriving modern folk-rock scene, and it is some of the most soulful in the subcontinent.

The living tradition

The Sketches, led by Saif Samejo, put Sindhi Sufi poetry over electric guitars and took it national — hear their Coke Studio turn. Dhol Faqeer keeps the shrine tradition of Shah Latif alive, and Zarina Baloch — a legendary Sindhi folk voice of the radio era, despite the Baloch surname — is essential listening.

Folk and the new wave

Sarmad Sindhi carries contemporary Sindhi folk, and Kamla Keswani the wedding and celebration songs that soundtrack Sindhi life.
